The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program is a four-month, full-time residential program based out of Yale’s International Leadership Center and housed within the Jackson School of Global Affairs. The Program provides World Fellows the opportunity to expand their vision, learn from each other, and grow personally and professionally. World Fellows contribute to Yale’s intellectual life, give talks and participate on panels, collaborate with peers, audit classes, and mentor students.

The Program was established in 2002 by Yale University President Richard C. Levin and Maurice R. Greenberg, the chairman emeritus of American International Group, Inc. Since then, the Program has welcomed over 400 World Fellows from 96 countries, representing a wide range of professions, talents, places, and perspectives.

Eligible Criteria

To be eligible for the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. While applicants who hold dual citizenship with the United States are eligible, strong preference is given to candidates whose work is focused outside the United States.
• Applicants must be between five and twenty-five years into their professional careers, with demonstrated and significant accomplishments at a regional, national, or international level. The average age of a World Fellow is 39, though there is no minimum or maximum age limit.
• Applicants must be fluent in English. An excellent command of the English language is essential to successfully participating in the program.
• Applicants must be people of character, integrity, energy, and talent. They must be dynamic, creative, disruptive, and innovative. They must be selfless leaders who serve, inspire, and motivate others. They must have demonstrated impact, they must be on the rise in their careers, and they must be ambitious to grow to their full potential.

Financial Coverage

The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program is a fully funded program that covers the following expenses for the selected fellows:

• A taxable stipend to cover the costs of living in New Haven.
• A modest, furnished one or two-bedroom apartment for the duration of the program.
• Medical insurance.
• Round-trip travel from home country.

Requirement

The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program requires the selected fellows to commit to a full-time residential program at Yale University from mid-August to mid-December 2024. During this period, fellows are expected to:

• Participate fully in an intensive education program that includes seminars by distinguished faculty members; professional development training; mentorship by Yale students; individualized coaching; peer learning; project work; site visits; and social activities.
• Contribute to Yale’s intellectual life by giving talks and participating on panels across campus; collaborating with peers; auditing classes; conducting independent research; writing articles or books; engaging with faculty and students over shared interests; and attending events.
• Expand their global network by connecting with other World Fellows in their cohort and with alumni spread throughout the world; joining Yale’s diverse community of scholars and practitioners; accessing Yale’s resources and facilities; and exploring New Haven and beyond.

Document Requirement

The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program requires the applicants to submit the following documents as part of their online application:

• A resume or curriculum vitae of no more than three pages.
• A personal statement of no more than 1000 words that describes why you are applying for this program; what you hope to gain from it; what you expect to contribute to it; how it relates to your personal and professional goals; how it fits into your career trajectory; what makes you stand out as a leader in your field or sector; what challenges you have faced or are facing as a leader; how you approach leadership development in yourself and others; how you deal with difference and diversity in your context; how you will use your time at Yale to further your leadership objectives; how you will leverage your experience as a World Fellow after returning to your country or region; and any other information that you consider relevant to your application.
• Three essays of 250 words each that respond to specific questions related to your professional accomplishments, your leadership challenges, and your global engagement.
• Three letters of recommendation that speak to your character, your achievements, and your potential as a World Fellow. The letters should come from people who know you well and who are in a position to give an informed and objective assessment of your candidacy. The letters should be written in English and should be uploaded by the recommenders through the online application system.
• A video statement of no more than two minutes that introduces yourself, explains why you are applying for this program, and showcases your personality and communication skills. The video should be recorded in English and should be uploaded to a video hosting service such as YouTube or Vimeo. The link to the video should be provided in the online application form.

Application Procedure

The Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program has a competitive and rigorous application process that involves the following steps:

• Step 1: Review the eligibility criteria and the program requirements carefully before starting your application. Make sure that you meet the criteria and that you can commit to the full-time residential program at Yale.
• Step 2: Create an account on the online application system and fill out the application form. You will need to provide personal information, educational background, professional experience, honors and awards, publications and media appearances, language skills, and contact details. The semi-finalist interviews will be conducted by Yale faculty and staff via video conference in February or March 2024. The final selection will be made by a committee of Yale senior leadership who will review the semi-finalist applications and interviews and select the final cohort of World Fellows. The final cohort will be announced in April 2024.

The deadline for submitting applications for the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program 2024 is December 6, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.
