The report, published in Variety earlier this month, indicates that the trend is on an upward trajectory, with a staggering 39% increase in pirated films in 2022 compared to 2021, and a 9% increase in website visits to stream and watch pirated shows.
This trend is expected to continue throughout 2023, signaling a serious challenge for the entertainment industry in the digital age.
According to a report by the US Chamber of Commerce’s Global Innovation Policy Center in 2019, the persistent problem of piracy is wreaking havoc on the film and TV industry, causing a massive financial loss ranging from $29 billion to $71 billion annually. This disturbing trend not only affects the livelihoods of all those involved, particularly independent creators, but it also has far-reaching negative consequences for the wider economy.
The Factors Leading To the Rise of Piracy
MUSO, on the other hand, has identified several reasons for the recent surge in piracy, including economic factors.

A 2019 Study by Vocus Group NZ in Regards To Piracy
In 2019, Vocus Group NZ, a New Zealand-based company, conducted a study which revealed that reducing the cost and increasing the accessibility of content is a more effective way to combat piracy than implementing new laws and regulations.
This means that rather than trying to control and restrict access to content, providers should focus on making it more affordable and available to consumers.
This finding has important implications for the entertainment industry as they try to strike a balance between protecting their intellectual property and meeting the demands of their audience.
By prioritizing accessibility and affordability, content creators can effectively deter piracy while also satisfying their fans.
Taryn Hamilton, the consumer general manager at Vocus Group NZ, revealed that the study showed that two specific approaches stood out as the most effective in addressing piracy.
A majority of respondents, 57% and 48% respectively, believed that making content more affordable and improving its accessibility were the best ways to discourage piracy.
On the other hand, punitive measures such as prosecuting pirates and censoring pirate sites were deemed less effective by only 33% and 22% of participants, respectively.
These findings suggest that simply punishing or censoring pirates is not enough to curb piracy, and a more comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of piracy is necessary to protect the intellectual property of content creators.
